Venus Williams has gone some way to making up for her shock exit in the women’s singles on Thursday at Australian Open 2009, teaming with sister Serena for a 6-3 6-3 win against Japan’s Ayumi Morita and German Martina Muller in the second round of the women’s doubles.
On a jam-packed Show Court 3, the American siblings started strongly before the Japanese/German combination broke at 2-1, with Muller hitting a number of impressive winners past Venus down the left-hand side of the court. The sisters broke back at 2-2, managing to regain the momentum for a 4-3 lead.
After being entertained by a streaker during the break, the sisters broke again at 5-3, with Serena sealing the game with a powerful cross-court forehand. Venus then served out the set, with one of her 180km/h serves skillfully caught by a member of their player box.
The second set contained a number of intense rallies, with the Williams sisters shining through with their superior volleying game. They broke at 2-1 and refused to let Muller and Morita back into the match, breaking again in the final game to take the match in just under an hour.
The American duo now faces a potential third round match up with Australian fifth seeds Samantha Stosur and Rennae Stubbs.
