Svetlana Kuznetsova and Nadia Petrova made a very brief appearance in the doubles on day three of Australian Open 2009, going down to the Williams sisters 6-3 6-1 in just over an hour.
Tenth seeds Venus and Serena played in front of a capacity crowd on Show Court 2, with spectators crowding court entrances in an attempt to get a chance to catch the formidable duo in action.
The Williams sisters got a break in just the second game of the match, but struggled to close out the set with Venus serving at 5-3. The game went to deuce four times before a Serena winner got them over the line.
A Venus Williams error gave Petrova and Kuznetsova a break point early in the second, but they failed to convert and the match went the way of the American sisters from then on.
The Russian pairing struggled to hold serve for the remainder of the match, with the Williams sisters breaking at every opportunity except one.
With Kuznetsova serving to stay in the match, the chair umpire over-ruled a call by a linesperson and demanded a replay. Kuznetsova served a double fault in the replayed point to hand the match to the Americans.
