Women’s singles top seed Jelena Jankovic has coasted into the second round of Australian Open 2009, defeating Austria’s Yvonne Meusburger 6-1 6-3.
In warm conditions at Rod Laver Arena, Jankovic showed no signs of any potential rust that may have come from her lack of matches leading into the tournament, racing to a 5-0 lead.
Meusburger showed more promise in the second set, recovering from 1-3 down to level proceedings at 3-3.
The Serbian world No. 1 responded by going up a gear, cracking backhand winners down the line seemingly at will to move ahead 5-3.
Needing three match points, Jankovic eventually broke her opponent to secure the straight-sets victory.
She will next face Belgian Kirsten Flipkens or Rossana De Los Rios of Paraguay in round two.
