  • Tonight’s final will be the first time Nadal and Federer have met on court at the Australian Open.
  • Both players have an 18-2 set win-loss record at Australian Open 2009.
  • Both players have played just one five set match, winning every other round in straight sets.
  • Nadal has spent exactly two hours longer than Federer on the court – 14 hours and 35 minutes, compared with Federer’s 12 hours and 35 minutes.
  • Nadal’s semi-final match broke the Australian Open match time record. At 5 hours and 14 minutes, he spent three minutes longer on the court than Boris Becker and Omar Camporese who previously held the record for the longest Australian Open match, standing since 1991.
  • If Federer wins today, he will equal Pete Sampras’ record of 14 Grand Slam trophies – but he will have got there faster, appearing in just 39 Grand Slams to date compared to Sampras’ 52 before he held up his 14th trophy.
  • Federer also holds the record for reaching the most consecutive Grand Slam finals with a run of 10 in a row starting with Wimbledon final in 2005 and ending when he fell in the semifinals to Djokovic here last year.
  • Federer has appeared in the 14 of the last 15 Grand Slam finals notching up 10 wins. His four losses were all to Nadal, including two in 2008.
  • Nadal has appeared in 7 finals, winning 5 and losing the other two to Federer.
  • The No. 1 and 2 rankings will remain unchanged regardless of the outcome of tonight’s match. The only difference will be the gap between the two players. If Nadal wins, he will widen the gap to more than 3000 rankings point, however if Federer wins the gap will narrow considerably to less than 17000 points.
  • Despite the draw being designed to make it as likely as possible that the top two seeds meet in the final (i.e. if the top seeded player in each match up progressed to the next round), this is the first time since 2000 that this has happened at the Australian Open.
  • Nadal leads the head-to-head of Federer-Nadal encounters 12-6 in Federer-Nadal.
  • Federer lost to Nadal every time they met in 2008.
