Top seed Novak Djokovic has crashed out of the Brisbane International in the first round, losing to Latvia’s Ernests Gulbis in straight sets 6-4 6-4 at the Queensland Tennis Centre today.
Gulbis stunned the Pat Rafter Arena crowd and Djokovic with his solid ground strokes in a duel that lasted less than 90 minutes.
Ranked 50 places behind Djokovic, Gulbis sent a message that he is capable of more than his current ranking suggests.
In the final game, Gulbis calmly and efficiently served it out to love, leaving the Serbian world No.3 to lament what went wrong.
Earlier, Czech Tomas Berdych was too strong for Australian wildcard Brydan Klein, demolishing the local in straight sets.
Berdych overpowered the 2007 Junior Australian Open champion 6-0 6-4 on Pat Rafter Arena while Victoria Azarenka beat Slovak-born Australian Jarmila Gajdosova 7-6(4) 7-5 in a tough second-round match.
