Maria Sharapova has dedicated her tournament win to the late mother of her coach Michael Joyce, declaring that she thinks of Jane Joyce each time she begins a match.
"I really want to dedicate this win to her," Sharapova declared.
Winning 7-5 6-3, Sharapova was overcome with emotion as she held the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup over her head triumphantly.
"If someone had told me in the middle of last year that I would be standing in the middle of this tennis court holding the big one, I would have said get out of here."
Sharapova honoured her opponent Ana Ivanovic, who was gracious in defeat.
"She's a great young girl… both of us are going to have many more chances," Sharapova said.
Even the Serbian fans received a mention in the victory speech, as Sharapova thanked them for attending matches, even if they were a bit loud.
"I even love the Serbian fans because they come and fill out the stadium, and that’s what we tennis player's like."
